A Gift of Blue, Watercolour, 54 x 46cm, $350
I started painting twelve years ago, doing some classes and workshops at Woolgoolga Art Gallery in NSW
We moved to Orbost two years ago and I joined the Wilderness Coast Artists.
At the moment I enjoy setting up subjects for still life paintings.
I have tried painting in most mediums with oils being my favourite. I am learning watercolour by trial and error and starting to really enjoy it.

Inspiration for my painting comes from the place I live and the places I visit. Each one tells a small story. Each one has one or more birds or animals moving through it.

I rarely work from photographs. Although I sometimes paint en plain air, I prefer to work in the studio, relying on the memory of place in combination with the sketches, drawings and notes recorded in in the sketchbooks that travel everywhere with me.

Drawing is the foundation for all my paintings. The design for each is resolved in the sketches before painting can begin. Drawing resolves the tonal map. Contrast is the key.

Catherine Cotter

Catherine Cotter has resided in Marlo (Where the Snowy meets the sea) since 1970 and has never wanted to leave.
Her love of the area can be seen in the way she paints her impressions of the beauty that is far East Gippsland.
Although she has travelled extensively throughout Australia as well as internationally, and occasionally paints about her travels, she is most inspired by her immediate surroundings and the mountains not too far away.
Catherine is a founding member of Wilderness Coast Artists and a director of Feastonart Gallery. She is also a member of East Gippsland Art Gallery and The Alpine Gallery.

Cruising, Pastel, 57 x 70cm, $400
The painting before you, reflects my journey over twenty years losing the sight in my left eye. This portrait of me, reflecting from the mirror, interprets my emotional, spiritual and physical being in art form.

This loss of sight has impacted my art interpretation, affecting my colour palette, altering my depth perception, changing my contrast assessment and even physically changing the sensation and judgement of paint brushing on the canvas.

The gaze reflects the stare of the raw depression of loss and disbelief: in my face. Areas in my portrait are half completed, half done, and lines that diminish fade into nothingness.
There is a void in my field of vision.

A Bush Block, Oil, 46 x 46cm, $400

Joiners Channel, Acrylic, 48 x 48cm, $400
Ngaere Donald was born in Sydney, NSW. From an early age she has loved painting and drawing, and was encouraged by her mother, an artist and student of Dattilo Rubbo. Ngaere's intention was to attend art school but she got sidetracked by her other passion - horses. Whilst working as a jillaroo she was inspired to paint horses, capturing their movement and colour in action.

A curiosity about the Snowy river and where it meets the sea brought her to Orbost. Here she married a dairy farmer and combined family and milking cows with painting. She has attended art workshops and classes whenever possible and completed a Visual Arts Degree at the Bairnsdale annex of the Gippsland Institute of Adult Education.

Ngaere paints in a loose impressionistic style using all mediums. Her favourite subject is horses, but she also enjoys capturing her local rural landscape and surrounding environment. "En plein aire" is her preferred way of working and weather conditions add to the experience, bringing excitement and movement to her art.

Ngaere has successfully exhibited solo and also jointly with other artists and has been awarded many prizes. Her works sell well and are owned by many local, national and international art lovers. Ngaere's work can be seen at AGRA galleries, Camberwell and The Great Alpine Gallery, Swifts Creek.

Jeanette works in coloured pencil and black pen and is fascinated by the shapes and colours of the Australian bush. From the many shades of green in a rainforest to the reds, pinks and ochres of the outback. The shapes, textures and surreal forms of trees is her inspiration.

The old saying "there's nothing straight in nature" has "freed" her imagination to draw them in all their weird and wonderful forms.

Lyn Lewis

I only began to fulfill my artistic dreams after retiring and moving to Marlo, East Gippsland fourteen years ago, and finding the wonderful group, the Wilderness Coast Artists.

Heather livingstone
Heather Livingstone's inspiration for painting comes from the animals, birds, mountains and rivers of the mountain country of East Gippsland where she was born and bred. Amongst her favourite subjects are mountain cattlemen and their horses and the high country with its bird and animal life. Growing up, she always had a pencil and sketchbook handy and listened to the drovers' tales of trips from the Monaro to the Bairnsdale saleyards. The poetry of Dorothea McKeller's "I Love a Sunburnt Country" and the "Man From Snowy River" were defining influences in her artistic development.
Training to become a primary school teacher also gave her an opportunity to learn painting with a member of the Boyd family as well as doing a course at Melbourne Technical College.
After a few years teaching school at Gelantipy she headed overseas, spending a year in Holland and a year teaching in Scotland. This provided access to the great galleries of Europe. "Everywhere I went, I always carried a sketchbook and a pencil or two." , H.L.
Heather worked at farming and teaching, married and settled at Molly's Plains near Buchan, where she and her husband established a property. She joined painting groups at Sale and Bairnsdale and learned from many good tutors who visited from Melbourne and beyond. She has demonstrated and taught art groups for many years. Her successful studio gallery at Molly's Plains saw many of her paintings heading overseas and around Australia.
Heather and her husband have 'retired' to Newlands Arm on the Gippsland Lakes where she has established a new studio gallery. All proceeds of her art sales are donated to cancer research.
The Gallery at Newlands Arm is open most weekends and public holidays or by appointment. Contact: 03 5156 7357

anita lutze
I started painting seriously four years ago. Prior to that my focus was on teaching Folk Art. This type of art was not very original but it taught me a great deal about colour and how to use a paint brush. There was a period of quite a few years where I did no art at all.

I joined the Wilderness Coast Artists and have benefitted greatly from the experience of the other members who are very generous in sharing their knowledge and providing advice and constructive criticism. I have participated in a wide range of workshops which has given me the opportunity to learn from some of the best tutors in acrylic, pastel and watercolour.

Watercolour has becom my medium of choice. I love its unpredictability and how you can apply it in different ways to get different effects. It has taken me some time to find my own style but I really do love painting in the realistic style.

I like painting different subjects, landscapes, birds and architecture and have just begun learning portraiture . . quite a challenge! Painting gives me a great deal of pleasure and I enjoy the sense of achievement when I have been able to capture the essence of my subject.

Varanasi Dawn, Oil, 50 x 70cm, $480
After completing Year Twelve Art and Graphic communication I left art making until around 2010, when I joined Beaumaris Art Group. I studied drawing and painting with tutor Michelle Zuccolo for several years.
With guidance from fellow painter Alban Gomes, I have developed a method of cohesion across the canvas by building a painting from mono chromatic mid-tones then using a limited palette. I am particularly conscious of lighting effects and try and create moods through selecting scenes that generally have a theatrical element of light.
I have exhibited around Melbourne frequently over the past ten years, selling paintings and receiving commissions for works. I have had numerous Highly Commended awards.

Dawn has a deep affinity for the natural and spiritual world, that is reflected in all her artwork.

Currently living in Orbost, her intimate knowledge of the East Gippsland environment and inhabitants grew from many years living in the forest. She is well known for her highly sought after paintings of owls. However, her subjects of choice are much broader, including native Australian flora and fauna.

Superb draughtmanship and comprehensive knowledge and familiarity with all her subjects are hallmarks of her distinctive style.

margaret van dam
I am Margaret Van Dam and I live in the small East Gippsland town of Swan Reach on the beautiful Tambo River.

I am involved with a small group of like minded artists at Metung on a monthly basis to compare, support and critique our varied styles of artwork. This always includes a sumptuous morning tea. I am also a member of the Wilderness Coast Artists at Marlo where there is opportunity to work with even more diverse artists and join in some fabulous workshops with leading Australian artists. This has enabled me to try some interesting new media which I hope to pursue this year.

My garden and the bird life that frequents it provides inspiration for many of my paintings. My love of collage stems from many years as a primary art/craft teacher making do with whatever materials could be scrounged from different sources. My love of mixed media also stems from those years. I only turned to watercolour a few years ago nursing my late husband. It was easy to pick up and put down without the waste of materials and it was a good stress buster.

I have been involved in many exhibitions over the years and submitted works to numerous art shows. I have exhibited paintings and drawings at the Bright art show for many years now and have sold many pieces to lovely people who have appreciated the effort that has gone into each piece.
